Life with a Baseball Player

Sounds exciting, right?
Well, yes, it is. But it’s also…challenging, to say the least.
I met Mike in the off season of 2013, he had just been placed on the 40 man roster. This is huge to a minor leaguer because the 40 man is the roster of players that the affiliated major league team can call up to the big leagues! Of course, I had no idea what any of this meant when we first met.
I grew up watching football, not baseball. Oopsies! :pKC
Spring Training came around and he was off to the Royal’s facility in Surprise, Arizona. I had only flown once or twice before and never by myself. But if I wanted to see him I had to either hop on a plane or tackle the 8hr drive
(each way)…
To the airport I went! Back and forth from California to Arizona. This was a feat for me. I was such a nervous flyer, wasn’t sure what to do in the security line or where to go and why the hell is the airplane shaking?!
Oh, turbulence? Okay…
On April 7th, 2014 Mike got the call and was headed to the Majors!
(I was in my last semester of college working at Abercrombie when he called to tell me the news)
He made his major league debut on April 11th in Minnesota against the Twins.
Honestly, I probably ruined the excitement for him because I just kept asking a million questions. Like I said, I really knew nothing about baseball and didn’t even realize how ironpigsbig of a deal it was.
From then on his career has been crazy.
Bouncing from team to team, getting DFA’d, clearing waivers, getting picked up, playing in the majors again, getting released…you name it, it’s happened. (See all those baseball terms I’ve picked up? 😉 )
Yes, life with a baseball player is exciting in every sense. I get to watch the love of my life live out his dream. I want him to have the best career possible and always be as proud of himself as I am of him. I’ve been around for 5 seasons now and I still find myself getting choked up in the stands when I see him out there. It’s so surreal. & I hope I never lose that feeling or take any of this journey for granted.

I try to post daily and am constantly talking my followers ears off in my stories 🙂

I’ll start from the beginning…
I was born and raised in Porterville, California. It’s a small town in the San Joaquin Valley known for…well I don’t think anyone knows anything about Porterville, HA!

I am the baby of 5 – I have 3 older half siblings (1 brother & 2 sisters) and 1 full-blooded, nothing she can do about it, sister 🙂 That’s Megan. She and I are the closest in age (26 months apart) and if you ever hear me reference ‘my sister’, that’s who I’m talking about. My dad was a Police Officer and we were so lucky to have our mom be a stay at home mom. I’ll talk more about my parents in another post…cause they’re pretty awesome.

My mom had my sister and I in church at least once a week growing up and for that I am so thankful. I continue to walk by faith and without knowing Jesus, I don’t know where I’d be today. We did it all; AWANAs, VBS, children’s choir, my sister even led worship on Sunday nights where I’d make the occasional cameo for one of our infamous Garay sister duets
( <–those come in song or dance form). If we weren’t at church we were at dance class. Shoutout to Dance Horizons!

Elementary school was okay. Yeah, just okay. I joke about how I used to be fat but I really was a little chubster. a non-bra wearing, gap-toothed, frizzy-haired chubster. I’ll never forget this big bad 6th grader yelling “Shut up, four eyes!” to me during a kickball game. (By the way, be nice to people. it might stick with them for 20 years). The summer between 6th & 7th grade saved me. I lost 20lbs, got contacts and learned how to use a straightener. Ever since then things have been looking up. I like to say I have ‘ugly duckling syndrome’ because sometimes…most of the time…I still see myself as that 6th grader in dire need of a makeover. But if you ask my mom, she would say i was adorable. AKA: a mother’s love.

Going in to high school, my best friend and I knew a lot the seniors through her older brother so that made the transition much easier. It also meant we started partying a lot sooner too 😛 -My party days is going to have to be a separate blog post as well, haha!-
My sister was a junior when I was a freshman so she paved the way. She was a cheerleader so I became a cheerleader, she was in drama so I was in drama, she was in AP classes I was…not in AP classes. Drama and Cheer took up most of my free time but I was happy to do it. I’ve always been super outgoing and cheer filled the void once I stopped dancing. I was immature, loud, forgetful, unorganized, you name it. But I really think everything changed when the squad voted me their varsity captain. Something clicked and I grew up overnight. Those were my girls and I had to be on the ball. Ever since then I’ve been…better. Still immature, loud, forgetful and unorganized yet somehow everything gets done. My sister has even labeled me a “go-getter”. All in all, i had a great high school experience!

Moving on to college: my most memorable years that are also that hardest to remember. I was an Interior Design major at California State University, Fresno. I moved into a house with my sister, her boyfriend and our friend Michael. We were really the only ones in our group of friends who had a house instead of an apartment so we threw most of the parties. Not just any ol’ party. We had themes and costumes and disco lights and our beloved beer bong. What more could you ask for? Partied so hard one night I pooped my pants at work the next day. Yup, that happened. Between said parties I had full class loads and 3-4 jobs. Oh to be young again 😉 I met my boyfriend, Mike during my last semester of college and also got an internship at my current company. I guess you could say this is when things really started falling in to place. Once I graduated that following May, the company offered me a full-time position in their LA office. I was officially an interior designer!

I packed up my car and moved down South – away from everything and everyone I knew. I stayed in the LA office for about a year then transferred to their Newport beach office for about 3 years. Mike would come and live with me during his off seasons (approximately October – January) and during the rest of the year I would try to go visit him one weekend a month. Last year we started building our first home together in Texas so once the home was complete (March 2018) I moved to Texas and have been working from home ever since!

Here I am: designer, girlfriend, new home owner and blogger extraordinaire!
Well, getting there 😉

How We Met

October of 2013 I was in my last semester of college and dating a loser. On October 8th (don’t ask why I still remember the date) I cut it off and vowed to stay away from guys for a while. I continued to do so for the next couple of weeks and then Halloween came around. I had already celebrated early with my best friend in Bakersfield so I wasn’t planning on going out again…

Then some guy on Instagram starting liking a couple of my pictures. Being the deprived woman I was, I went to check out his page. He was freaking hot! I noticed he had posted a picture with one of my friend’s boyfriends. Naturally I texted my friend asking her who Mike Mariot was. She replied in some form of ‘Omg he’s so sweet. We’re going to his place for Halloween – come!’ Well I did already have a costume… Sure, why the hell not 😉

Halloween night rolls around and I’m getting ready at my friend’s house stressing that I need to look perfect – I’m about to meet my future husband! I know it sounds silly but I knew it. Maybe because I was sick of dating and just wanted to find ‘the one’ or maybe God was whispering in my ear ‘don’t screw this up.’

We pull up to his place and I’m nervous as hell in my Wonder Woman costume, we walk inside…and then my memory goes blank! I don’t remember what happened next, Mike says he leaned over the couch shook my hand, haha! The next thing I do remember is realizing that the guy dressed up as a Hooter’s waitress is my supposed future husband.

We eventually made it out to the bars and he and I were dancing all night as if we’d thenightwemetknown each other forever. (Here’s a picture of us the night we met) It was such a good night! He and his friend even won “Best Costume” and got $100 to the bar. Pretty sure I still refused to let him buy me a drink – I don’t know if I was playing hard to get or what.

The night is over and it’s time to leave. Mike walked me out and asked “Can I have your number so I can call you sometime?” To which I replied “You have me on Instagram…”
He makes fun of me for that to this day. Again, I think I was playing hard to get. He disagrees and just thinks I’m an idiot LOL

From that night on we were inseparable (that’s why our anniversary is Halloween 🙂 )
Well, come to find out, he’s only in town for a few months (baseball off-season) then off to Arizona then Nebraska for 8 months. I don’t think I knew how much I liked him until we sat down to start looking at flights for me to visit him and I started crying. I am not a crier.

February came around and it was time for him to go. I was a freaking mess. I hadbaseball pic class that morning so he sat in my car with me for a minute before we said our final goodbye. We hugged and he got out of the car. I was crying so hard I couldn’t even see. He had come around to my side and was tapping on the window. I rolled the window down and he told me he loved me for the first time. Somehow I uttered out the words “I love you too.”

I don’t think we ever had a ‘let’s try to make this work’ conversation. We just knew we were going to make it work.

Here we are; five years later, still long distance, still crying like a baby every time he leaves, still making it work.hawaiiback

Life with a Frenchie!

Hank the Tank!!
The apple of our eye, the love of our life.hank car
No but seriously, we freaking love our dog. We don’t have kids yet so he gets allll the love.
I grew up with English Bulldogs, Mike grew up with Labs. I wanted a Frenchie, we got a Frenchie 😉 I really wanted to rescue but they are so popular and in such high demand that it was nearly impossible. We found a breeder that was in Texas (we were still living in California at the time) Mike’s parents were sweet enough to go to the breeder’s house and meet Mr. Hank in person for us. They face-timed us while they were there and all we saw was a blur of what they described to be a puppy with ‘character’. HA! He was running around like a mad man while his siblings cuddled up for more pets. Mike’s mom assured us he was ‘the one’. Boy am I glad we listened! Hank is now 1 1/2 years old and just as feisty as ever.

If you’re considering getting a French Bulldog, I’ve compiled a short list of advice/tips.
(I’ll do a full blog post in the future)

Just be prepared for all the love, cuddles and laughs that are in store for you!

Diet:
I am not a morning person – this must have rubbed off on Hank because he’ll sleep in until 10am if I do 😀 He has a bed *he has at least 4 beds* but he sleeps with me. Partly because he tends to get cold in the middle of the night and will come scratch at the bed for cuddles or for me to cover him with a blanket and partly because he’s the best snuggler out there. Back to his diet…
Breakfast – he’s not on a strict time schedule (because his mom isn’t) so Breakfast is whenever I give it to him. He used to eat Pulsar which is a great Canadian brand but he never seemed too interested in it. I’ve switched him over Wellness Core – Small Breed  which is gets very excited for. *TIP: you may already know this but I didn’t…When a food is labeled “small breed” that just determines the size of the kibble. If your pooch’s weight is not listed on the recommended serving size table just do the math to figure out how much more food you should be giving them*
Dinner for him is whenever I eat – anywhere between 6 and 8. Treats are everywhere in between 😉

Sensitive little guys:
Bulldogs may look tough but they actually have a very weak immune system. They suffer from conditions anywhere from allergies to Spina Bifida.

Two words : Pet Insurance.

We chose to go with Trupanion. I’m sure there are many great companies out there; we chose Trupanion solely because they require you to meet your deductible per condition rather than annually. We knew that by getting a Frenchie, he would most likely acquire conditions that stuck with him (like his allergies) his entire life instead of random incidents that sent him to the vet throughout the year. You also get to choose your monthly payment!

Travel:
Hank is the best travel buddy! We got him on a Thursday and drove with him from Texas to Florida on Sunday. He got used to traveling real fast. Here he is sleeping at my feet during that trip 🙂hank travel
A month later he and I flew from Florida to California. Here he is during that trip – not as relaxed..he hated that carrier. Luckily, I was able to get him licensed as an Emotional Support Animal so the carrier is no longer required! Now he sleeps at my feet, in my lap or, if the flight attendants really like him, he’ll sleep in the empty seat next to me.hank airplane
All in all, he’s just the best dog. Follows me everywhere I go, including the bathroom, snores louder than Mike, spazes out on the daily and loves every person and every dog…maybe a little too much at times but he means well 😉

Oh, and I know you’re all dying to know…YES! Hank has an instagram 😉

Hank the Tank

Bulldog (n):  A canine that can’t hear their name called 10 times but can hear a packet of biscuits being opened whilst asleep…3 rooms away…during a thunderstorm.
