Life Lately

So we’re nearing the end of January 2019, our house is coming together and Mike is finally home!

I can’t believe we’re coming up on 1 year of home ownership. I moved into the house March 29th 2018 and Mike has been here off and on for about a month collectively. Haha, that’s just how it goes…

The Fiancé:
Mike has been home from the Dominican Republic for less than a week (he started the season in February). We’re trying to get back in the swing of things – it’s really hard for me and my routine when he comes home. I’m so used to being alone that having someone else in the house, someone else to consider for meals, my outings…is a challenge. That being said, I’m SO happy he’s finally home. He’s a free agent this year and with spring training right around the corner I’m getting anxious to receive that call. Where are we gonna live? Who’s he going to play for?

Emily Elizabeth:
I’m still working from home as an Interior Designer for a company back in California and pouring my heart & soul into Life with Emily Elizabeth. I’ve never been so passionate about something in my entire life. How did it take me this long to start?! I absolutely love sharing my daily life, tip & tricks that hopefully help you and those sales I get such a rush out of. Thank you, thank you, thank you for following along!

Hank the Tank:
Hank is currently 30 lbs. of meatball perfection. He’s loving having a backyard but missing his daily dog park visits (it’s so damn cold here!) We’ve been talking more & more about getting him a ‘friend’. The poor guy loves to play with other dogs but the feeling is rarely mutual…he’s a little much.

Oh, and as far as wedding planning goes – don’t worry, I’m not holding out on you guys I just literally haven’t done a single thing yet. I know, I’m the worst bride-to-be ever. We are planning for a 2020 wedding because we already have 3 weddings to go to this fall and Mike’s off season was virtually non existent. Maybe later on in the year I’ll get my butt in gear but for now I’m enjoying not being a crazy fiancé and just staring at my new hand candy.

STARBUCKS FOR LIFE

No surprise here – you all know I looove me some Starbucks!
See below for all my go to orders:

DRINKS

Ride or Die: Iced Doppio in a Tall cup, 2 pumps vanilla, splash of half & half
This is the ‘poor girl’s Vanilla Latte’ (I made that up) but really, enjoy the same style drink for half the price.
Mix it up, try caramel instead of vanilla or almond milk instead of dairy – knock yourself out!

When I want to treat myself: Iced Caramel Macchiato Extra Caramel
& don’t let them be stingy with that caramel either, you tell them if you want more

Mike’s Order: Venti Iced Coffee w/ Non-Fat Milk & Classic Sweetener
Get creative with this one as well – switch up the syrup, maybe try it with coconut milk, go crazy

For Cold Nights: Caramel Apple Spice
Oh em gee, apple cider on crack. No caffeine in this one, just cinnamon-y goodness

When I need to switch it up: Java Chip Frappuccino
You just can’t go wrong

When I’m sick: Medicine Ball
If your store doesn’t know how to make it, I got you.
1/2 steamed lemonade, 1/2 hot water, Jade Citrus Mint tea, Peach Tranquility herbal tea + honey

FOOD

Bacon & Gruyere Egg Bites – Delish & semi low in calories

Bacon Gouda Breakfast Sandwich – ask for this cooked “open faced”. This means they’ll open up the sandwich before heating so the bacon gets crispy. It’s a must.

Carved Ham & Swiss Breakfast Sandwich – Comfort food for less than $4

Chicken Sausage & Bacon Biscuit – Y’ALL. Starbucks really outdid themselves on this one.

Cheese Danish – a classic. Do I want it warmed? Of course I want it warmed.

Toffeedoodle – It’s toffee, it’s a snickerdoodle. Need I say more?

How I Maintain [& Style] Long, Color Treated Hair

Oh man, this MANE – we have a love/hate relationship. More love than hate…but there’s def some hate in there.

maintanence2

I only wash my hair once a week. Around day 5 I have to start using dry shampoo and by day 7 I’m really pushin’ it and Mike doesn’t like to snuggle anymore 😛

I’ve made a list of all the product I use when that dreaded day 7 comes around:
Shampoo – Ogx Biotin & Collagen
Conditioner – Ogx Biotin & Collagen
Brush – Wet Brush ‘Shine’
Conditioning Spray – Enjoy
Dry Serum – Biosilk
Blow Dryer – T3
InStyler – Max Prime
Hair Spray – Elnett
Collagen – Vital Proteins (take this everyday!)

I finally found a shampoo & conditioner that my hair loves and it’s less than $6! My hair feel so soft and healthy when I use this.
I towel dry, brush, then spray Enjoy Conditioning Spray to help any weak or damaged hair before blow drying.
Once my hair is dried, I like to use Biosilk to give some extra shine (it also smells amazing) by focusing on my ends.
You guys already know I swear by the InStyler – it’s so easy to straighten or curl. The rod spins (no you hair will not get caught in it) so it really helps hide and smooth out any dead ends. Yay!
I always finish with Elnett hairspray. There are multiple versions; I’ve tried them all and they’re all great.
The last thing I use for the health & care of my hair (along with the rest of this bod) is Vital Protein’s Collagen Peptides. I use the flavorless and put it in my coffee, smoothies, top ramen, you name it. I promise you’ll see a different how you look & feel.

That’s all folks!

How I Became an Interior Designer

Growing up I was constantly rearranging the furniture in my room. I would brace my back up against a wall and puuuush my dressers across the room. There were many a time where I yelled for my parents while trapped under a fallen dresser. *face palm*

I didn’t always know design was what I wanted to do. I’ve also always loved fashion; I still have my sketch book from grade school full of dress sketches.

When college came around I began my major in Business Administration at my local community college thinking I would open up my own clothing boutique one day. But once I started taking micro and macro economics I was OVER IT. That’s when I switched my major to Art and didn’t tell my parents : D They eventually found out and all I remember my dad saying was “You better make it work.” Because of the overlap in majors I ended up double majoring in Art and Social Science – real useful.

I graduated from community college and transferred to CSUF where I majored in Interior Design! : ) The professors in my program all had different backgrounds (architect, commerial designer, residential designer and landscape design) which was instramental in my decision to go into commercial design. One day a classmate made an annoucement that Tangram Interiors was hiring a designer for their Bakersfield office and to submit our resumes if we were interested. Heck yes I was interested – even if it was in Bakersfield, I just wanted a job! I asked one of my professors to help me with my resume and write a letter of recommendation. The next day I emailed my resume then drove my eager butt to Tangram’s Fresno office to introduce myself to the manager and hand in a physical copy of my resume. The next couple of weeks consisted of telephone and Skype interviews, an interview with the VP of Sales in their Bakersfield office and an interview with the Design manager at their headquaters in Santa Fe Springs. Five interviews later, I GOT THE JOB!!

I interned at the Fresno office during my last semester of college and once I graduated I was hired on full time. Come to find out, I was the only student in my program to apply. Maybe because they didn’t want to work in Bakersfield? Well once I was hired they asked why I wanted to be in the Bakersfield office and I replied “I thought that’s where the job was.” They responded by telling me they also have offices in Los Angeles and Newport Beach – take your pick! So I spent 1 year in Los Angeles then moved on down to the OC where I spent 4 years in the Newport Beach office. It’s been an amazing job, company and experience. They understand my sitution with Mike traveling for baseball and agreed to let me become a remote worker. Freaking dream come true. (I threw around the idea of us possibly moving to Japan or Korea and my manager said “Well, your work hours might be a little weird but they have WiFi there so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.”)

I know the fear of rejection is scary, but if you never even try then the only person you’re letting down is yourself. It is so rewarding to see your hard work realized.

My New Years Resolution

2018 was certainly a year of change. We lived in 3 states, were signed to 5 different teams, visited 6 countries, bought our first home and got engaged!!

I want to make 2019 the year of consistency. Although I love that I’m not the neurotic planning type and accept change with open arms, I definitely see the faults in my ‘go with the flow’ attitude. So here I am, putting it out there for you all to hold me accountable, I’m going to be more consistent. More consistent in my eating habits, sleep schedule, workout routines, work ethic and last but not least – keeping a clean house. Ugh I’m the worst! and Mike is the second worst haha. So here’s to picking up after myself, not resorting to a drive-thru dinner or whatever excuse I come up with to not workout.

CHEERS!!

Life with a Baseball Player

Sounds exciting, right?
Well, yes, it is. But it’s also…challenging, to say the least.
I met Mike in the off season of 2013, he had just been placed on the 40 man roster. This is huge to a minor leaguer because the 40 man is the roster of players that the affiliated major league team can call up to the big leagues! Of course, I had no idea what any of this meant when we first met.
I grew up watching football, not baseball. Oopsies! :pKC
Spring Training came around and he was off to the Royal’s facility in Surprise, Arizona. I had only flown once or twice before and never by myself. But if I wanted to see him I had to either hop on a plane or tackle the 8hr drive
(each way)…
To the airport I went! Back and forth from California to Arizona. This was a feat for me. I was such a nervous flyer, wasn’t sure what to do in the security line or where to go and why the hell is the airplane shaking?!
Oh, turbulence? Okay…
On April 7th, 2014 Mike got the call and was headed to the Majors!
(I was in my last semester of college working at Abercrombie when he called to tell me the news)
He made his major league debut on April 11th in Minnesota against the Twins.
Honestly, I probably ruined the excitement for him because I just kept asking a million questions. Like I said, I really knew nothing about baseball and didn’t even realize how ironpigsbig of a deal it was.
From then on his career has been crazy.
Bouncing from team to team, getting DFA’d, clearing waivers, getting picked up, playing in the majors again, getting released…you name it, it’s happened. (See all those baseball terms I’ve picked up? 😉 )
Yes, life with a baseball player is exciting in every sense. I get to watch the love of my life live out his dream. I want him to have the best career possible and always be as proud of himself as I am of him. I’ve been around for 5 seasons now and I still find myself getting choked up in the stands when I see him out there. It’s so surreal. & I hope I never lose that feeling or take any of this journey for granted.

I try to post daily and am constantly talking my followers ears off in my stories 🙂

I’ll start from the beginning…
I was born and raised in Porterville, California. It’s a small town in the San Joaquin Valley known for…well I don’t think anyone knows anything about Porterville, HA!

I am the baby of 5 – I have 3 older half siblings (1 brother & 2 sisters) and 1 full-blooded, nothing she can do about it, sister 🙂 That’s Megan. She and I are the closest in age (26 months apart) and if you ever hear me reference ‘my sister’, that’s who I’m talking about. My dad was a Police Officer and we were so lucky to have our mom be a stay at home mom. I’ll talk more about my parents in another post…cause they’re pretty awesome.

My mom had my sister and I in church at least once a week growing up and for that I am so thankful. I continue to walk by faith and without knowing Jesus, I don’t know where I’d be today. We did it all; AWANAs, VBS, children’s choir, my sister even led worship on Sunday nights where I’d make the occasional cameo for one of our infamous Garay sister duets
( <–those come in song or dance form). If we weren’t at church we were at dance class. Shoutout to Dance Horizons!

Elementary school was okay. Yeah, just okay. I joke about how I used to be fat but I really was a little chubster. a non-bra wearing, gap-toothed, frizzy-haired chubster. I’ll never forget this big bad 6th grader yelling “Shut up, four eyes!” to me during a kickball game. (By the way, be nice to people. it might stick with them for 20 years). The summer between 6th & 7th grade saved me. I lost 20lbs, got contacts and learned how to use a straightener. Ever since then things have been looking up. I like to say I have ‘ugly duckling syndrome’ because sometimes…most of the time…I still see myself as that 6th grader in dire need of a makeover. But if you ask my mom, she would say i was adorable. AKA: a mother’s love.

Going in to high school, my best friend and I knew a lot the seniors through her older brother so that made the transition much easier. It also meant we started partying a lot sooner too 😛 -My party days is going to have to be a separate blog post as well, haha!-
My sister was a junior when I was a freshman so she paved the way. She was a cheerleader so I became a cheerleader, she was in drama so I was in drama, she was in AP classes I was…not in AP classes. Drama and Cheer took up most of my free time but I was happy to do it. I’ve always been super outgoing and cheer filled the void once I stopped dancing. I was immature, loud, forgetful, unorganized, you name it. But I really think everything changed when the squad voted me their varsity captain. Something clicked and I grew up overnight. Those were my girls and I had to be on the ball. Ever since then I’ve been…better. Still immature, loud, forgetful and unorganized yet somehow everything gets done. My sister has even labeled me a “go-getter”. All in all, i had a great high school experience!

Moving on to college: my most memorable years that are also that hardest to remember. I was an Interior Design major at California State University, Fresno. I moved into a house with my sister, her boyfriend and our friend Michael. We were really the only ones in our group of friends who had a house instead of an apartment so we threw most of the parties. Not just any ol’ party. We had themes and costumes and disco lights and our beloved beer bong. What more could you ask for? Partied so hard one night I pooped my pants at work the next day. Yup, that happened. Between said parties I had full class loads and 3-4 jobs. Oh to be young again 😉 I met my boyfriend, Mike during my last semester of college and also got an internship at my current company. I guess you could say this is when things really started falling in to place. Once I graduated that following May, the company offered me a full-time position in their LA office. I was officially an interior designer!

I packed up my car and moved down South – away from everything and everyone I knew. I stayed in the LA office for about a year then transferred to their Newport beach office for about 3 years. Mike would come and live with me during his off seasons (approximately October – January) and during the rest of the year I would try to go visit him one weekend a month. Last year we started building our first home together in Texas so once the home was complete (March 2018) I moved to Texas and have been working from home ever since!

Here I am: designer, girlfriend, new home owner and blogger extraordinaire!
Well, getting there 😉
