How I Became an Interior Designer

Growing up I was constantly rearranging the furniture in my room. I would brace my back up against a wall and puuuush my dressers across the room. There were many a time where I yelled for my parents while trapped under a fallen dresser. *face palm*

I didn’t always know design was what I wanted to do. I’ve also always loved fashion; I still have my sketch book from grade school full of dress sketches.

When college came around I began my major in Business Administration at my local community college thinking I would open up my own clothing boutique one day. But once I started taking micro and macro economics I was OVER IT. That’s when I switched my major to Art and didn’t tell my parents : D They eventually found out and all I remember my dad saying was “You better make it work.” Because of the overlap in majors I ended up double majoring in Art and Social Science – real useful.

I graduated from community college and transferred to CSUF where I majored in Interior Design! : ) The professors in my program all had different backgrounds (architect, commerial designer, residential designer and landscape design) which was instramental in my decision to go into commercial design. One day a classmate made an annoucement that Tangram Interiors was hiring a designer for their Bakersfield office and to submit our resumes if we were interested. Heck yes I was interested – even if it was in Bakersfield, I just wanted a job! I asked one of my professors to help me with my resume and write a letter of recommendation. The next day I emailed my resume then drove my eager butt to Tangram’s Fresno office to introduce myself to the manager and hand in a physical copy of my resume. The next couple of weeks consisted of telephone and Skype interviews, an interview with the VP of Sales in their Bakersfield office and an interview with the Design manager at their headquaters in Santa Fe Springs. Five interviews later, I GOT THE JOB!!

I interned at the Fresno office during my last semester of college and once I graduated I was hired on full time. Come to find out, I was the only student in my program to apply. Maybe because they didn’t want to work in Bakersfield? Well once I was hired they asked why I wanted to be in the Bakersfield office and I replied “I thought that’s where the job was.” They responded by telling me they also have offices in Los Angeles and Newport Beach – take your pick! So I spent 1 year in Los Angeles then moved on down to the OC where I spent 4 years in the Newport Beach office. It’s been an amazing job, company and experience. They understand my sitution with Mike traveling for baseball and agreed to let me become a remote worker. Freaking dream come true. (I threw around the idea of us possibly moving to Japan or Korea and my manager said “Well, your work hours might be a little weird but they have WiFi there so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.”)

I know the fear of rejection is scary, but if you never even try then the only person you’re letting down is yourself. It is so rewarding to see your hard work realized.

I try to post daily and am constantly talking my followers ears off in my stories 🙂

I’ll start from the beginning…
I was born and raised in Porterville, California. It’s a small town in the San Joaquin Valley known for…well I don’t think anyone knows anything about Porterville, HA!

I am the baby of 5 – I have 3 older half siblings (1 brother & 2 sisters) and 1 full-blooded, nothing she can do about it, sister 🙂 That’s Megan. She and I are the closest in age (26 months apart) and if you ever hear me reference ‘my sister’, that’s who I’m talking about. My dad was a Police Officer and we were so lucky to have our mom be a stay at home mom. I’ll talk more about my parents in another post…cause they’re pretty awesome.

My mom had my sister and I in church at least once a week growing up and for that I am so thankful. I continue to walk by faith and without knowing Jesus, I don’t know where I’d be today. We did it all; AWANAs, VBS, children’s choir, my sister even led worship on Sunday nights where I’d make the occasional cameo for one of our infamous Garay sister duets
( <–those come in song or dance form). If we weren’t at church we were at dance class. Shoutout to Dance Horizons!

Elementary school was okay. Yeah, just okay. I joke about how I used to be fat but I really was a little chubster. a non-bra wearing, gap-toothed, frizzy-haired chubster. I’ll never forget this big bad 6th grader yelling “Shut up, four eyes!” to me during a kickball game. (By the way, be nice to people. it might stick with them for 20 years). The summer between 6th & 7th grade saved me. I lost 20lbs, got contacts and learned how to use a straightener. Ever since then things have been looking up. I like to say I have ‘ugly duckling syndrome’ because sometimes…most of the time…I still see myself as that 6th grader in dire need of a makeover. But if you ask my mom, she would say i was adorable. AKA: a mother’s love.

Going in to high school, my best friend and I knew a lot the seniors through her older brother so that made the transition much easier. It also meant we started partying a lot sooner too 😛 -My party days is going to have to be a separate blog post as well, haha!-
My sister was a junior when I was a freshman so she paved the way. She was a cheerleader so I became a cheerleader, she was in drama so I was in drama, she was in AP classes I was…not in AP classes. Drama and Cheer took up most of my free time but I was happy to do it. I’ve always been super outgoing and cheer filled the void once I stopped dancing. I was immature, loud, forgetful, unorganized, you name it. But I really think everything changed when the squad voted me their varsity captain. Something clicked and I grew up overnight. Those were my girls and I had to be on the ball. Ever since then I’ve been…better. Still immature, loud, forgetful and unorganized yet somehow everything gets done. My sister has even labeled me a “go-getter”. All in all, i had a great high school experience!

Moving on to college: my most memorable years that are also that hardest to remember. I was an Interior Design major at California State University, Fresno. I moved into a house with my sister, her boyfriend and our friend Michael. We were really the only ones in our group of friends who had a house instead of an apartment so we threw most of the parties. Not just any ol’ party. We had themes and costumes and disco lights and our beloved beer bong. What more could you ask for? Partied so hard one night I pooped my pants at work the next day. Yup, that happened. Between said parties I had full class loads and 3-4 jobs. Oh to be young again 😉 I met my boyfriend, Mike during my last semester of college and also got an internship at my current company. I guess you could say this is when things really started falling in to place. Once I graduated that following May, the company offered me a full-time position in their LA office. I was officially an interior designer!

I packed up my car and moved down South – away from everything and everyone I knew. I stayed in the LA office for about a year then transferred to their Newport beach office for about 3 years. Mike would come and live with me during his off seasons (approximately October – January) and during the rest of the year I would try to go visit him one weekend a month. Last year we started building our first home together in Texas so once the home was complete (March 2018) I moved to Texas and have been working from home ever since!

Here I am: designer, girlfriend, new home owner and blogger extraordinaire!
Well, getting there 😉

Life with a Frenchie!

Hank the Tank!!
The apple of our eye, the love of our life.hank car
No but seriously, we freaking love our dog. We don’t have kids yet so he gets allll the love.
I grew up with English Bulldogs, Mike grew up with Labs. I wanted a Frenchie, we got a Frenchie 😉 I really wanted to rescue but they are so popular and in such high demand that it was nearly impossible. We found a breeder that was in Texas (we were still living in California at the time) Mike’s parents were sweet enough to go to the breeder’s house and meet Mr. Hank in person for us. They face-timed us while they were there and all we saw was a blur of what they described to be a puppy with ‘character’. HA! He was running around like a mad man while his siblings cuddled up for more pets. Mike’s mom assured us he was ‘the one’. Boy am I glad we listened! Hank is now 1 1/2 years old and just as feisty as ever.

If you’re considering getting a French Bulldog, I’ve compiled a short list of advice/tips.
(I’ll do a full blog post in the future)

Just be prepared for all the love, cuddles and laughs that are in store for you!

Diet:
I am not a morning person – this must have rubbed off on Hank because he’ll sleep in until 10am if I do 😀 He has a bed *he has at least 4 beds* but he sleeps with me. Partly because he tends to get cold in the middle of the night and will come scratch at the bed for cuddles or for me to cover him with a blanket and partly because he’s the best snuggler out there. Back to his diet…
Breakfast – he’s not on a strict time schedule (because his mom isn’t) so Breakfast is whenever I give it to him. He used to eat Pulsar which is a great Canadian brand but he never seemed too interested in it. I’ve switched him over Wellness Core – Small Breed  which is gets very excited for. *TIP: you may already know this but I didn’t…When a food is labeled “small breed” that just determines the size of the kibble. If your pooch’s weight is not listed on the recommended serving size table just do the math to figure out how much more food you should be giving them*
Dinner for him is whenever I eat – anywhere between 6 and 8. Treats are everywhere in between 😉

Sensitive little guys:
Bulldogs may look tough but they actually have a very weak immune system. They suffer from conditions anywhere from allergies to Spina Bifida.

Two words : Pet Insurance.

We chose to go with Trupanion. I’m sure there are many great companies out there; we chose Trupanion solely because they require you to meet your deductible per condition rather than annually. We knew that by getting a Frenchie, he would most likely acquire conditions that stuck with him (like his allergies) his entire life instead of random incidents that sent him to the vet throughout the year. You also get to choose your monthly payment!

Travel:
Hank is the best travel buddy! We got him on a Thursday and drove with him from Texas to Florida on Sunday. He got used to traveling real fast. Here he is sleeping at my feet during that trip 🙂hank travel
A month later he and I flew from Florida to California. Here he is during that trip – not as relaxed..he hated that carrier. Luckily, I was able to get him licensed as an Emotional Support Animal so the carrier is no longer required! Now he sleeps at my feet, in my lap or, if the flight attendants really like him, he’ll sleep in the empty seat next to me.hank airplane
All in all, he’s just the best dog. Follows me everywhere I go, including the bathroom, snores louder than Mike, spazes out on the daily and loves every person and every dog…maybe a little too much at times but he means well 😉

Oh, and I know you’re all dying to know…YES! Hank has an instagram 😉

Hank the Tank

Bulldog (n):  A canine that can’t hear their name called 10 times but can hear a packet of biscuits being opened whilst asleep…3 rooms away…during a thunderstorm.
